JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

We are currently seeking a full-time Medical Biller to join our growing team in a new location in Portland. The Medical Biller role is entrusted with all aspects of our interactions with health insurance companies on behalf of our patients. The Medical Biller role is also patient-facing as this team member answers patient questions regarding their benefits and their claims.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prioritize and complete work, process billings in a timely manner, and meet deadlines.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and check specific benefit details.
  • Obtain prior authorizations or referrals, when required.
  • Predict estimated costs and report them to patients.
  • Bill claims through Office Ally
  • Download and process claims through various insurance sites and OHP.
  • Post payments and adjustments in our proprietary database.
  • Answer patient questions about insurance benefits and claim processes.
  • Create itemized receipts for patient reimbursement submissions.
  • Fight claim denials and underpayments from insurance payers.
  • Appeal denied claims that were incorrectly processed.
  • Prepare refunds to patients.
  • Occasionally collect balances from patients.
  • Periodic patient-facing front office duties and responsibilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • 3+ years' experience in medical billing and Accounts Receivable.
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines, including HMO/PPO, and other payer requirements and systems.
  • 2+ years appealing denied claims in a high-volume environment.
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 coding; comprehension of medical terminology.
  • Highly organized with strong problem-solving, computer, and typing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, confidentiality and accuracy required.
  • Collaborative approach to working as a team member; positive and constructive attitude.
  • Effective communication skills for phone contacts with insurance payers to resolve issues.
  • Effective communication skills for written contact contacts with insurance payers and patients to explain issues.
  • Strong aptitude for learning software used to process resident billings.
  • Flexibility in managing workload and supporting team.
  • Advanced keyboarding and working knowledge of MS Office applications: Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to understand and work with mathematical concepts.
  • Requires ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Experience with both commercial health insurance and government programs.
  • Experience with a variety of provider portals and clearinghouses: Office Ally, Availity, One Health Port, Cigna, United Healthcare, and others.
Location: This role is based in Portland and supports our Seattle and Portland operations.
Hours/schedule: Full-time, regular, non-exempt position, with hours Monday to Friday; some Saturdays, as needed.
Remuneration: $25/hour, plus a team-based bonus.
