Position Summary: The Senior Accountant supports the Assistant Controller and thus provides essential research, analysis, and documentation necessary to complete the monthly, quarterly and year end closing processes. The position has direct responsibilities for both internal and external financial reporting processes and supports the University's various external audit efforts. The Senior Accountant is required to access and perform duties using the Banner Finance applications. The position interfaces with various staff and departments throughout the University.
Position Responsibilities:

  • Account Reconciliation and Analyses-Prepares various payroll related account reconciliations and account analyses. Ensures account reconciliations are performed, reviewed and approved timely and accurately. Ensure all required journal entries are posted prior to closing the month and fiscal year-end, including journal entries from other campuses.
  • Student Finance Liaison- Reviews student finance activity and prepares and/or reviews student finance reconciliations on a timely basis. In charge of the year-end student finance reconciliations and ensures that all entries are posted accurately.
  • Fixed Assets - Responsible for maintaining Banner Finance fixed asset module, including capitalization of equipment, and building improvements.
  • Debt Service - Responsible for maintaining debt service schedules and related amortization tables. Coordinate with Treasury staff over related journal entries for various debt series.
  • Contributions - Working with Institutional Advancement and reviewing gift agreements to determine whether they are properly classified in the University financial records. Performs monthly and quarterly gift reconciliations.
  • Treasury Operations - Daily Cash Flows-Maintains daily and weekly cash flows analysis and yearly cash flow forecast projections in collaboration with the Budget and Investment Offices. Responsible for preparation of going concern analysis.
  • Support Assistant Controller-Provides support and gets direction from the Assistant Controller. Will be responsible for maintaining closing calendars for monthly and quarterly financial reporting. Assist with the monitoring of annual year-end closing calendar and deliverables, including strict adherence to timelines.
  • Annual External Audits-Provides support throughout the annual external audit process, including preparation of the University and its related affiliates financial statements and related notes to the financial statements. May also assist with other audited compliance filings, census data, and government surveys.
  • Accounting Pronouncements-Analyzes and draft related position papers regarding implications of new accounting pronouncements issued by the FASB and related interpretations by NACUBO.
  • Tax Support-Works with the Tax Director to ensure that necessary tax schedules are prepared accurately and on a timely basis for all required Forms 990 and other required census and government surveys.
  • Internal Reporting-Produces periodic and ad hoc financial reports for internal and external users, including senior management.
  • Compliance and Policy Review-Supports the Assistant Controller in maintaining the University's fiscal accounting policy and procedures, works to ensure business processes are in place related to asset management accounts including treasury operations, facilities and property, plant and equipment and related depreciation, tuition and fees and their related receivables, accounts payable and related accruals, including payroll withholdings and related fringe benefit accounts and debt management including maintenance of amortization tables.
  • Business Process Improvement-Collaborates with all areas of the University to streamline procedures, including periodically assess the efficiency and effectiveness of closing and account reconciliation processes.
  • Special Projects-Performs special projects and ad hoc assignments as assigned by the Assistant Controller and the Controller.
Experience & Education Background:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and a minimum of five years of progressive experience in public accounting or experience in similar position, preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience in senior role and preparation of financial statements.
  • CPA is required.
  • A Master's degree and experience with university and other higher education not for profit organizations and with internal control design and business process improvement, and working with complex financial systems environments is preferred.
  • Previous experience with Banner Finance is desirable.
Skills & Competencies:
  • The position requires very strong accounting technical skills and the ability to research and formalize accounting treatment of significant transactions.
  • The individual must have a hands-on approach and ability to set priorities and work effectively amongst varied constituents.
  • The individual must be detail oriented with strong organizational skills applied to the performance of their duties.
  • Strong spreadsheet, interpersonal, writing, and analytical skills are necessary.
  • Strong work ethic, professionalism, and ability to exercise discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to establish plans, manage a large workload and multiple assignments with conflicting priorities and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced office.
Salary Range: $90,000 - $115,000
